History

SaverLife was originally founded as EARN in 2001 by a group of prominent individuals including financier F. Warren Hellman, California State Senator Mark Leno, former Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Bob Friedman, San Francisco County Supervisor Roberta Achtenberg, San Francisco Foundation CEO Saundra Hernandez, and CEO, Ben Mangan.

The nonprofit became an innovative leader in the asset building field, creating a robust Individual Development Account program and one of the country’s first children’s savings programs, Triple Boost. In addition to helping thousands of Bay Area families to purchase homes, get a college education or start a small business, EARN played a pivotal role in the launch of Kindergarten to College, the country's first publicly funded universal college savings program and Bank on San Francisco an initiative launched by the City of San Francisco to bring unbanked San Franciscans into the financial mainstream. EARN was named Social Capitalist of the Year by Fast Company, received the James Irvine Foundation Leadership Award, and was the only non-profit selected in 2016 for the JPMorgan Chase Financial Solutions Lab.

In 2017, EARN launched SaverLife, a free online platform designed to help working Americans change their savings habits and gain better control of their financial future. Providing incentives, insights, financial coaching, and prizes, SaverLife quickly attracted tens of thousands of members nationwide while generating compelling personal success stories. Inspired by the success, EARN changed its name to SaverLife in 2019, uniting its nonprofit services under the SaverLife banner. The organization continues to launch innovative savings programs, help its diverse partners develop working solutions for their clients and employees, and deliver data-driven research to promote awareness and change.
